Hitachi SB8V2 Belt Sander Review: Variable Speed Power Tool

Hitachi SB8V2 Belt Sander Review

Hitachi is a company that has been producing high quality power tools for years. Having that level of experience, you know you can rely on most anything they produce to meet your expectations and serve you well, providing an excellent amount of ability and capacity for the price you pay. If you’re looking for a top quality belt sander that can handle any job appropriate for its class, the Hitachi SB8V2 is exactly that.

With loads of power, numerous special features, great versatility and long-lasting utility, the SB8V2 is one of the best belt sanders you can get for the price range it’s at, and it performs better than most of its same class competition. As always, Hitachi comes through with an excellent product that gets the job done.

Product Overview

Product: Hitachi SB8V2 Belt Sander

Cheapest Place to Buy:

Unique Feature: Soft Grip Handle; Trigger Lock

My Rating: 9.1 out of 10

At 14.3 x 9.2 x 8.6 inches, the Hitachi SB8V2 is an average size, not much larger or smaller than other belt sanders of the same class and price range. It is easy enough to manage and carry, and doesn’t take much space in storage.

With a weight of nine and a half pounds, the Hitachi SB8V2 is an average weight, once again not much heavier or lighter than most of its competition. It is light enough that it can easily be stored on a wall, and also light enough to not be an issue in long-term use. With its mostly manageable weight, you can use it for long periods of time without getting tired or fatigued.

However, it is worth nothing that the weight is not perfectly balanced.

Power Type

The Hitachi SB8V2 is a corded electric power tool. The cord itself is not especially long, so it will usually require an extension cord.

This is obviously something that impairs mobility, but said extension cord solves the problem rather easily. On the flipside, you don’t have to purchase costly batteries or battery packs, which are a significant expense and hassle.

Special Features

The Hitachi SB8V2 comes equipped with many special features making it more versatile and capable. It has variable speed control, which allows you to set the speed between 820 to 1475 feet per second.

It has an elastomer grip for comfortable and stable usage, a tracking window that makes it easier to see just what you’re doing during operation, a wear-resistant V-belt for extended service life, and a dust collection bag to ensure that any mess is kept down to a minimum.

Purchase of this power tool from Hitachi includes the bare tool, as well as the dust catching bag attachment. It does not include the belts you need for use with the tool, which must be purchased separately.

The Hitachi SB8V2 is an all-around great tool. It isn’t an unreasonable size, and it doesn’t weight a great deal, though the weight it does have is admittedly somewhat unbalanced.

However, this limited con is made up for by its many useful extra features, such as variable speed control, a sanding window, and ergonomic grip. It has great power and very few drawbacks, making it an especially effective tool.

At a price of less than $140, the Hitachi SB8V2 is a somewhat hefty investment, though it is a worthy one. That said, you don’t get any sanding belts out of this price, but belts are relatively inexpensive.

On the flipside, being corded means you won’t have to pay for batteries or battery chargers either, which are in turn much more expensive and a constant factor to consider in the long-term cost of a tool.

Helpful Tips

The modern power tool is designed to be as safe as physically possible. But even so, they pose a significant amount of risk if you are not careful, or if you are unprepared. We recommend that you always read the safety and user manual prior to usage, and that you always equip yourself with the proper safety gear, namely goggles, though gloves are highly advisable as well.

Bottom Line

The Hitachi SB8V2 is not a flawless machine. It does have its limits, and the weight is not perfectly balanced. That said, these flaws are very minor compared to the belt sander’s many strengths. The SB8V2 has a great deal of power that it can exercise at various speeds, and it is easy to wield and see what you’re doing.

It has a rather short power cord, but an extension cord solves that problem very easily, and being corded means you can run the tool essentially indefinitely.

While a cost of roughly $140 is somewhat substantial, it is a very reasonable price for a belt sander of this class, not being much more expensive than any of its competitors. For the amount of money that you are paying, the Hitachi SB8V2 is an excellent investment that is guaranteed to handle most of the tasks you have for it, and with its long service life, you can expect it to continue serving for several years.
