Product Overview

Product: Makita 9403 Belt Sander

Cheapest Place to Buy:

Unique Feature: Large Front Grip

My Rating: 9.3 out of 10

With dimensions of 16.14 x 8.86 x 9.84 inches, the Makita 9403 is an appreciably large power tool. There’s no denying that it has quite a bit of length to it, but this means it is capable of utilizing larger belts, such as the 4 x 24 belt that is comes with.

Due to its decent size, the Makita 9403 weighs a hefty thirteen pounds, which is definitely on the heavier end of belt sanders. That said, the weight generally won’t have any negative effects, since you’ll usually be resting it on another surface.

Thirteen pounds is significant, but it also isn’t enough to prevent you from hanging the tool on the wall of your garage for easy storage.

Power Type

The Makita 9403 is a corded electric power tool that uses 120 volts. Being corded means its portability is limited to the nearest power outlet, but considering its use, this shouldn’t be much of a problem.

On the other hand, being corded means you don’t have to invest in expensive battery packs and recharger stations, and you’ll be able to continue working as long as you have electricity.

Special Features

This particular belt sander has many extra functions designed to make it more convenient and simple to use, as well as more comfortable.

The Makita 9403 is the quietest belt sander of its class at only eighty-four decibels. Its labyrinth construction seals the inner mechanisms from contamination. It comes with a large cloth dust bag so it doesn’t make a mess, and it comes with a large front grip optimally positioned for user comfort.

Makita 9403 Belt Sander Review

Purchase of the Makita 9403 comes with the belt sander itself, the dust bag for keeping the area clean, and one 4 x 24 inch abrasive belt for sanding.

Purchase of the Makita 9403 comes with a one-year warranty at base. Admittedly, this isn’t exceptional considering the price you are paying for the tool itself. However, Amazon has two other protection plans that last longer, both of which can be purchased for under ten dollars.

The Makita 9403 is a large, somewhat heavy belt sander. However, it compensates for those facts by bringing the appropriate amount of power to the table in exchange.

The large size allows it to equip a four inch wide belt that can operate at 1,640 feet per minute. And of course, despite its large size, it is one of the quietest belt sanders of that size at only eighty-four decibels.

It is constructed in a labyrinth style that makes it extremely tough and resilient, so the hefty investment will last you for several years if you treat it right.

This is where the Makita 9403 makes its professional quality known. At a very pricey investment of less than $250, the 9403 is quite expensive.

That said, this price isn’t exactly abnormal for high-quality belt sanders of the same class, most of which are still above the $200.00 mark. Still, there’s no denying that the price of the Makita 9403 is quite high, and other than the bare tool and a dust catching bag, all you get in addition is a one-year warranty and one abrasive belt.

Whether or not that is worth it is up to each customer’s discretion.

Helpful Tips

Power tools are designed with safety in mind these days, but that doesn’t change the fact that the risk of injury still exists.

We recommend that you always read the safety manual before operating the machine, and you should always wear proper protection for whatever sort of work you are doing.

Bottom Line

The Makita 9403 is somewhat large and heavy, and it comes with a hefty price tag. However, it is a price well paid for a belt sander that is professional quality, with loads of power and durability that will last years if you treat it well.

While expensive, it is about the average cost of belt sanders of the same class, and it is also equipped with numerous features to make the investment worthwhile. It is the quietest belt sander of its class, has an ergonomic grip, and a dust catcher, as well as being able to operate at over 1,600 feet a minute.

While it only comes with a one year warranty, an extra ten dollars solves that, and ultimately the cost is earned in a powerful tool.

  • Quietest belt sander of its size
  • Can operate at over 1,600 feet a minute
  • Package comes with abrasive belt and dust catcher

  • A hefty investment
  • Quite large and somewhat heavy
